    [SOLVED] Lucid automatic update, then can't use keyboard or mouse

    I allowed 9.10 (Karmic) to automatically update to 10.04, but when I boot to the login screen the keyboard does not allow me to do anything, and the mouse pointer can not be moved (USB mouse and touchpad). I have to power down to reboot. Everything works with a 10.04 Lucid Live CD.

    This is an Acer laptop (Aspire 5000 series -- fairly recent); dual boot with Wondoze XP.

    I could:
    a. poke around inside config folders, starting with the Live CD;
    b. try booting an older kernel from GRUB (but then what?);
    c. re-install from the Live CD, but lose other software that I'd downloaded and is presumably still there;
    d. give up (not an option ;

    Suggestions, please, for un-"bricking" Lucid.

    Looking for inspiration,
    Peter

    A possible issue is that there is a problem with xserver.

    Reboot your machine and select recovery mode. Select the xfix option. However it's so long since I needed to boot into recovery mode I can't remember if that option is there in 10.4. If it isn't select command prompt and type

    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    Once that is done select resume normal boot.

    Any joy?

      FIXED: Lucid automatic update, then can't use keyboard or mouse

      Thanks for the pointers.

      1. I copied down your suggested sudo instruction.

      2. From GRUB I booted into the most recent kernel's recovery mode. (All the options showed v9.04.)

      3. I accepted the options to 'fix' issues. Quite a few MBs of download later, it said I could finally boot in a normal manner. It did not, but I then powered down and it booted perfectly.

      Just "one of those things", and I learned to love the Recovery option.

      With my thanks,
      Peter

        Re: Lucid automatic update, then can't use keyboard or mouse

        For: The Liquidator

        I should have mentioned that when booting back in, GRUB shows all the options as 10.04 now (was 9.04, which is why I mentioned it in the earlier post.) I have also installed a real-time version and it was among the options seemingly updated this time.

        All good!

        Thanks,
        Peter

          Re: [SOLVED] Lucid automatic update, then can't use keyboard or mouse

          Great stuff!

          Once point - upgrades of more than 1 version (in your case 9.04 to 10.04 - missing out 9.10) can quite often be a bumpy ride

          If the issue is now solved, could you please modify the title of your first thread to include solved in the title?

          Thanks

          ian
