Fresh install but it appears to be an upgrade???

From a usb key, I installed Kubuntu 10.04 over Kubuntu 9.10
During install, during Disk Usage I set sda1 to be formatted.
In the last screen it warned me I was to lose all data as it will be formatted.

But when I finished and rebooted, my custom wallpaper was still the same, keyboard shortcuts remained, my taskbar had the same widgets in them etc.

I ran "cat /etc/lsb-release" and it said Ubuntu 10.04

However, all the apps I ever installed were gone. Firefox, VLC, Chrome etc, all gone.
And Konqueror, that I had uninstalled was back.

Did I get upgraded or is this some kind of 'smart' fresh install?

Do you have a separate home partition ?
    What is telling ?::
    Code:
    grep "home" /etc/fstab
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

      yes I do!
I specified /home to sdb because:
      1 sda is only 4GB
2 So I can reinstall OS without messing with my files

okay so many of these things live in the home directory.

Have I still achieved a fresh install?

Or need I backup my visible home folders, format /home during install, then restore later?

Yes. But, user configuration files from 9.10 still exist in your users /home partition. That's why you saw your 9.10 desktop wallpaper after booting/logging in to 10.04.
