[SOLVED] Intel D845GRG motherboard onboard graphics...

    [SOLVED] Intel D845GRG motherboard onboard graphics...

    Hi all...

    The same system that I wrote about here has an Intel D845GRG motherboard with 845G onboard graphics. Everything works well for the most part except that it can't seem handle 3D acceleration very well at all. Glxinfo claims that direct rendering is enabled (see below.) That includes a good portion of the games available in the repositories. Even Emilia Pinball doesn't work.

    When I've tried to run any of these 3D applications, the screen turns black and then the upper half starts blinking white. At that point I have to shut it down using the power button since it won't respond to anything else. Upon restart everything works fine.

    Is there any way to fix this problem apart from installing a separate AGP graphics card? Or is this chipset simply unable to handle intensive acceleration?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Intel on-board graphics always seem to be a sore spot in Linux. Some chipsets work great, and others not at all. However, for any type of gaming you would be wise to pick up a cheap AGP card and use the proprietary drivers. Good luck!

      intel graphics must use drivers from glasen ppa, read here. Alternatively, you can also use xorg-edgers drivers (ppaorg-edgers/ppa)

          That's precisely what I ended up doing: I went down to the local computer recycling shop and bought a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128 MB AGP card from Chaintech. Threw it in and installed the proprietary drivers and off we went. The graphics are much better!

                My Intel Mobile Series 4 Graphic chip has been working well with the i915 driver and the previous version of xserver. What driver does edgers use, and is it kernel specific?

                  Hi all...

                  I did try the edgers driver before I bought the video card. Unfortunately, it didn't work on my system. It knocked out glxinfo (and I suspect direct rendering as well,) nor would it still handle anything that required acceleration. The positive thing about it was that the screen no longer turned black, it just closed the session requiring me to log back in!

                    1.8.2 for Lucid; see other related thread.

                    FWIW, I have the same Intel graphics as you -- Mobile Series 4 -- on my Acer. It's running xorg-edgers very well, but do know that I'm running on Precise, not Lucid. For some reason, KWin effects on OpenGL fail using the xorg that's packaged with Precise, but behave wonderfully on xorg-edgers.

                    Install the ppa-purge package before you install packages from xorg-edgers. If edgers borks your system, ppa-purge makes it easy to return to the prior state.

                      Installed edgers stuff and the new video driver works great. It is, according to Stellarium, about twice as fast as my old driver.

                      I used the apt-add-repository command to add edgers to my sources.list be it borked. I describe the recovery in another thread.
