Samsung CLP 320 - usb failed

    Hi,

My new Samsung CLP 320 colour laser printer will not work with Linux. Win7 is just fine.

I did use the "System setup" printer and the printer was recognized and everything look right.

Except - it will not print.

In the Setup for local ... printers, I find this message:

    Code:
    Printer ... : Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed
    When I do

    Code:
    lsusb
    I find this line:
    Code:
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 04e8:329f Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd

    And when I do

    Code:
    lpstat -l -p
    I get this:

    Code:
skriveren CLP-320_Series er inaktiv. aktivert siden ma. 07. feb. 2011 kl. 16.26 +0100
        /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed
        Aktivert skjema:
        Innholdstyper: alle

        Beskrivelse: CLP-320_Series
        Varsling: none
        Plassering: XXXXX
        Tilkobling: direkte
        Grensesnitt: /etc/cups/ppd/CLP-320_Series.ppd
        Ved feil: ingen varsling
        Etter feil: fortsett

        Tillatte skjemaer:

            (ingen)
        Standard avstand:
        Standard sidestørrelse:
        Standard portinnstillinger:
I have to admit - I don't understand anything of this - other than my printer is not working. (It works in Win7, so it's not the USB port as such.)

    Anyone able to help me?

Re: Samsung CLP 320 - usb failed

    An error message: "/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed"

    Few search results:
    > [SOLVED] Printer suddenly stopped working - Kubuntu Dappe:
...all seem to be after an upgrade...Problem solved. Reinstallation of cupsys through adept, followed by starting the printers through the cups web interface fixed the problem straight away.
    > "/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed" After Kernel Upgrade:
I downgraded the kernel and the printer works again..

Has there been a kernel upgrade ?
    Try with an earlier kernel.

... and one more (an earlier bug report) > "usblp Kernel module needs to be removed and /dev/bus/usb/*/* made accessible for USB printers to work with CUPS 1.4.x
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

      Thanks for helping.

I tried the oldest kernel I have - success!

So the solution is - boot with an old kernel?

Not necessarily. In the newer kernel, attempt to add/setup the printer via the CUPS interface. If you aren't familiar with CUPS, open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:631/
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

It's there - the line is like this:

          CLP-320_Series CLP-320_Series XXXX-nils Samsung CLP-315 Foomatic/foo2qpdl (recommended) Idle

What can I do with CUPS to make it work?
