Is it there by another name, or am I unable to print large format on my new MFC-5980cn?

Re: printer setup has no Ledger or 11x17 option
which driver are you using (I don't see a listing for that model)
http://www.question-defense.com/2010...inux#more-6920
has some instructions, if you don't have 64bit, ignore the first step
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...tml#MFC-5890CN
Don't know what options it provides, however

Re: printer setup has no Ledger or 11x17 option
Sorry, I installed the 32-bit cupsys and lpr .deb files from Brother for this model. After that and an lpd restart, I was able to select this model from the list just like any other. Well, you have to hand-edit for changing from USB to Ethernet, but there are instructions for that on the Brother web page.Originally posted by claydohwhich driver are you using (I don't see a listing for that model)
Yes, this pretty much reflects a standard Brother driver install, like I did.Originally posted by claydohhttp://www.question-defense.com/2010...inux#more-6920

Thanks, that's what I've got! I'm not sure where the paper choices come from. On one hand, I've heard they are region dependent, which means Ubuntu/CUPs is doing something. On the other hand, what printer media capabilities (and the tray they feed from) must also be in the driver or .PPD file.Originally posted by claydoh
I'm not sure where to go from here, maybe file a bug report with Brother?

Wow, now that's interesting. I just pounded through the usual install process (I've done other Brother printers before, both at home and at work) and never knew that there was an automated installer.Originally posted by claydohor this might be something as well

However, I don't think that's going to install any more than what I already have. I think it just finds the right downloads for you, does the package installs and the links.

Re: printer setup has no Ledger or 11x17 option
I think to get to Ledger, I simply need to choose Tabloid and change from Portrait to Landscape (or vice-versa). I was unaware that these two were the same size, rotated, until I just did a little research.
I asked here first because there were 30-some choices in the drop-down to research... :P
I plead ignorance to paper names nuances because I try to stay paperless!

Re: printer setup has no Ledger or 11x17 option
I don't bother unless its letter, legal, or #10, else it means I have to do something work-like
though that means I am underutilizing my old brother 1440 laser printer I got for free -- the repaiman though it was broken. My company gave it to me, and it has been printing reliably (though seldom used) for 2 years now in linux
