    Black Screen after update

After yesterdays update I now get a black screen with a mouse. I am sure it is the video. This Dell Studio 1535 has been a video nightmare since purchase even in windows, huge mistake. It is the Intel video x3100. My problem is I can't remember how to start it in a safe video mode or how to remove the Nvidia drivers.

do you have an intel or a nvidia video card in your box? Do you want to remove or re-install the nvidia drivers? Are you getting the KDE login screen? to start in safe video mode when X is not working i usually log onto a virtual terminal and edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and put vesa as the video driver; it is supposed (and actually does) to work with almost any video card on this earth; then you had to stop kdm and restart it (sudo service kdm stop/start).

Right after installing Lucid I was left with a black screened yet functional KDE and it was the that compositing effects were enabled but the loaded (nv because the propietary nvidia driver that I was using hadn't been compiled for the new kernel then) driver was not supporting 3-d acceleration.

Since you don't have KDE all you can do is disable them by editing the file ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and in the sectionv [Compositing] change the line enabled=true to enabled=false.

You don't need to do this if you solve the driver problem before.

    Hope it helps
