    Screen freezes on Kubuntu 12.04

    Hello.

Unfortunately this issue http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...4-beta-2 issue is still happenning.

I've been told the let a konsole open and tell which process is the culprit, but how I'll supose to do that if I can't click or switch to the konsole window? Also, I'm not an experienced user, so I can't analyze a file at /var/log as suggested (I don't even know which file it is).

Kubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 worked just fine, and I've never had this trouble before. Yesterday, I had four freezes. Four freezes in a single day!

System monitor is almost always running and my cpu barely reaches 7% of the 2,27 GHz with average use (libreoffice, dolphin, firefox and okular most of the time). Memory is almost always below 2,0 GB of 4,0. So, it's very unlikely that "the demand for CPU + graphics resources is exceeding the capacity of your system to fully and immediately respond, in its present configuration", as dibl said.

Is there anything else I can do?

Does it do the same for a newly created user?

        I don't know, didn't check it.

Run the following command in a terminal (Konsole) and post the results back here:
          Code:
          cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i driver

I am getting this a lot as well, I have a Nvidia GT250 graphics card. I also have Zorin OS and Linux Mint 12 KDE and this never happens with those.

Hmm... Unfortunately, I do not know what could be causing your freezes. I was curious what graphics chip/driver you were using, because the latest NVIDIA driver has a known bug for users of older cards, but you appear to be using an Intel chipset.

Does anybody know why you have to unmute the microphone, this has been a perennial bug for several years now?

Oh, by the way, the "Magic SysRq" does not work when this freeze occurs.

                    Edit:Yep, again.

It might be a stab in the dark, but you could try upgrading the Intel graphics driver using the X Updates PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

Also, if the updated Intel driver doesn't work, it might be worth trying the latest 3.4 kernel, which has fixed a number of Intel graphics-related issues, including a memory corruption bug that has affected my laptop for years. You can install the updated kernel by downloading the following packages into a folder:
                          . http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...011817_all.deb
                          . http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1817_amd64.deb

After downloading the packages, run the following terminal command from the folder in which these packages reside:
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb
This will install the kernel and add it to your boot menu as the default kernel. The current Precise kernel will remain installed and can be selected at boot using the "Older Linux Versions" menu option.

                          I hope this helps!

I just checked the Nvidia driver and I am using 295.40 for both Kubuntu and Mint, so it's probably not the graphics driver.

Regardless, you could always try downgrading to the version in the X Updates PPA (version 295.33) and see if the freezes go away. Enough people are having problems with 295.40 that it might be worth a try.
