A new lightweight QT desktop environment

Whilst surfing the Ubuntu Forums I came across a post for a new DE based upon QT. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1897600 It looks like a skinny KDE

Just wonder if any Kubuntu users would consider using it?

Of course, IF I didn't have the hardware to run KDE4 adequately.

Dang, you guys beat me to it. I just posted news of Razor-QT over in Geek News. I would consider at least trying it out as a possible "fallback" mode.(maybe?)

Thanks for putting the link in, OneLine. Maybe later we'll see Razor become the failsafe "version" of KDE once it (Razor) matures enough.

I hope this gets some momentum. Qt4 is much better Qt3 but I can't say the same for kde4 vs kde3.

Ever since 4.7, I would have to whole-heartedly disagree with that comment. But hey, there's always Project Trinity for those who wax nostalgic

Thank you for sharing! I have set up a Debian KDE partition because I wanted to try a stable release as a work environment, that use as little resources as possible so that I can use as much power on Blender 3D and other graphical applications. I'm not really satisfied with the DebianKDE, mainly cause I'm not used to it I guess. I think I'll try this on that partition when I get time, see if I can slim it down a bit further.

The little I've tried LXDE and Xfce (in a virtual box), I just don't like it. Think this looks promising.

Edit; what's that logotype? A pizza slicer? *mmmm ..pizza*

I've finally downloaded and installed razor-qt 0.4. Will now be testing it and reporting any bugs. Must do something to get my inner geek back!

Wish me luck on using this new DE.

Re: A new lightweight QT desktop environment

Having downloaded and installed the Razor-qt desktop environment from ppa:razor-qt I have been spending the whole of the last seven days using it.

As with all other Ubuntu packages installation was very easy with no input from me and once installed I simply logged out of my current session and logged back in using razor-qt.

Upon first view it does not look much different (layout wise) to LXDE. It does not come with its own window manager but uses openbox by default. It also doesn't come with a file browser like Dolphin but I simply downloaded PCMANFM for file management.

Once I had got used to setting up certain applets for the taskbar I was able to use it just like any other desktop environment. It is not yet that customisible because I have not yet found a way of changing its icon theme but can change the window decorations.

Even though it is only at 0.4 I have found it to be a very stable desktop. No crashes to date of the environment.

If you are the type of person who likes tinkering with the desktop environment and would like to use one that is light on resources then I would highly recommend Razor-qt.
