Do you have Nautilus installed [perhaps not by choice]?

    Do you have Nautilus installed [perhaps not by choice]?

    For Kubuntu 14.04 (I have 64-bit), can you please check to see if you have Nautilus installed?
    E.g., open Muon, in the search window at the top, search for nautilus (all lower case, of course).

    If so, two things:

    Can you please check to see if zeitgeist is installed?

    If you open Muon, then View > History, did these installations occur around March 6th? (Dates and times may differ due to time zones, but mine occurred March 6th, 3:30 pm.)

    - etc...

    What repositories are you using ?
    Only Ubuntu ?
    Kubuntu PPA (updates, backports,...)

      As I explained in another thread (Investigating Kubuntu), I got the full, running show with zeigtgeist (not just only the libraries): the core, the daemon, it was running and actively logging several of my main apps (Kaffeine, Firefox, Libre Office, about a dozen of them).
      So, these were installed (not by me, not knowingly), as was Nautilus:

      zeitgeist
      gir1.2-atk-1.0
      gir1.2-freedesktop
      gir1.2-gdkpixbuf-2.0
      gir1.2-gtk-3.0
      gir1.2-pango-1.0
      zeitgeist-core:
      zeitgeist-core*, and zeitgeist-datahub*

      libzeitgeist-1.0-1

      Yelp wouldn't do this? Pull in Nautilus, which pulls in Zeigtgeist?

          Line in the History log ?

              Did you install the 'cheese' ?

              Taking the list and looking the non automatic -> the 'cheese' is left

                I'll be darned. You know, I felt a certain "suspicion" about cheese, but then figured it is only a simple program for testing my Web Cam -- recommended by GreyGeek at one time.

                So I have purged-removed all of it: zeitgeist and nautilus and all the stuff that goes with it.

                My cheese still works, though, for testing my web cam ...

                I think you nailed it here! (I got a good lesson in doing investigative work. One can also chase this chain reaction down in the gui Muon, so I now see.)

                Thanks a lot for taking time to chase this thing down.

                Wondering, if there is ever an update for cheese, will it again pull in nautilus --> zeitgeist ...

                  glabels, for printing business cards and labels, does the same thing, pulls in Nautilus and then Zeitgeist. Beware Gnome apps!

                          apt-get install --no-install-recommends PKGNAME usually will work to prevent GNOME from being installed. You can perform a simulation run with apt-get -s REST-OF-COMMAND, too. This will display on the screen everything that would have happened if you actually installed something.

                              The difference is probably that aptitude why also considers uninstalled packages as it searches for a dependency resolution chain. The man page indicates this.
