Do you have Nautilus installed [perhaps not by choice]?

For Kubuntu 14.04 (I have 64-bit), can you please check to see if you have Nautilus installed?
E.g., open Muon, in the search window at the top, search for nautilus (all lower case, of course).

    If so, two things:

Can you please check to see if zeitgeist is installed?

If you open Muon, then View > History, did these installations occur around March 6th? (Dates and times may differ due to time zones, but mine occurred March 6th, 3:30 pm.)

    Thanks for checking.

As I explained in another thread (Investigating Kubuntu), I got the full, running show with zeigtgeist (not just only the libraries): the core, the daemon, it was running and actively logging several of my main apps (Kaffeine, Firefox, Libre Office, about a dozen of them).
So, these were installed (not by me, not knowingly), as was Nautilus:

      zeitgeist
      gir1.2-atk-1.0
      gir1.2-freedesktop
      gir1.2-gdkpixbuf-2.0
      gir1.2-gtk-3.0
      gir1.2-pango-1.0
      zeitgeist-core:
      zeitgeist-core*, and zeitgeist-datahub*
      libzeitgeist-2.0-0
      libzeitgeist-1.0-1

      And more: #22, #23 here:
      https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...l=1#post369172

Yelp wouldn't do this? Pull in Nautilus, which pulls in Zeigtgeist?

No, doesn't seem that yelp would be involved.

Line in the History log ?

          You wrote:
I can only see a few others: nautilus, yelp, brasero, gimp,...
What is the exact marking in the /var/log/apt/history.log ? (the log may be history.log.1.gz, history.log.2.gz, ...)

Trying with the yelp & Muon package manager:

          History log:
          Start-Date: 2015-03-24 17:48:30Install: yelp-xsl:amd64 (3.12.0-1, automatic), gnome-user-guide:amd64 (3.12.2-1, automatic), libyelp0:amd64 (3.12.0-1ubuntu1, automatic), yelp:amd64 (3.12.0-1ubuntu1)
          End-Date: 2015-03-24 17:49:01
The yelp is the what was asked to install the rest are automatic (depends, recommends).

Did you install the 'cheese' ?

Taking the list and looking the non automatic -> the 'cheese' is left

              The 'cheese': http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/cheese

Recommends: nautilus-sendto (+ lot of gnome packages) -> depends: nautilus

I'll be darned. You know, I felt a certain "suspicion" about cheese, but then figured it is only a simple program for testing my Web Cam -- recommended by GreyGeek at one time.

So I have purged-removed all of it: zeitgeist and nautilus and all the stuff that goes with it.

My cheese still works, though, for testing my web cam ...

I think you nailed it here! (I got a good lesson in doing investigative work. One can also chase this chain reaction down in the gui Muon, so I now see.)

Thanks a lot for taking time to chase this thing down.

Wondering, if there is ever an update for cheese, will it again pull in nautilus --> zeitgeist ...

                        If you have aptitude,
                        Code:
                        aptitude why nautilus
                        might shed some light.

Not sure what the equivalent of this command is with apt / apt-cache / dpkg, if any.

apt-get install --no-install-recommends PKGNAME usually will work to prevent GNOME from being installed. You can perform a simulation run with apt-get -s REST-OF-COMMAND, too. This will display on the screen everything that would have happened if you actually installed something.

                              Hm. This was my test:
                              Code:
                              steve@t520:~$ [B]aptitude why wodim[/B]
                              i k3b Depends wodim | cdrskin

                              steve@t520:~$ [B]apt-cache --installed rdepends wodim[/B]
                              wodim
                              Reverse Depends:
                               |k3b
                                genisoimage
The difference is probably that aptitude why also considers uninstalled packages as it searches for a dependency resolution chain. The man page indicates this.
