    Desktop Search does not work the way I expect it should

    Fully dist-upgraded on both my 32- and 64-bit 14.04 installs. All required baloo components are installed. I have Desktop Search and Desktop Search Advanced in System Settings.

    On my 32-bit install, Desktop Search Advanced > Folders > Include Folders include:

    /home/paul

    There are no excluded folders.

    On my 64-bit install, Desktop Search Advanced > Folders > Include Foldiers include:

    /home/paul/.local/share/contacts
    /home/paul
    /home/paul/.local/share/akonadi
    /home/paul/.local/share/.local.mail.directory

    There are no excluded folders.

    Desktop File Indexer is enabled and reports Desktop indexing services are running on both installs.

    But any Find in Dolphin comes up negative, whether using option Filename or Content, and using From Here (paul) or Everywhere.

    If Find in Dolphin works for you, I want to here from you. Rog131, are you listening?

    Does the 'Baloo Search - A debugging tool' find anything ?

    :~$ baloosearch --help
    Usage: baloosearch [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [options] query

    Generic options:
    --help Show help about options
    --help-qt Show Qt specific options
    --help-kde Show KDE specific options

    -l, --limit <queryLimit> Number of results to return
    -o, --offset <offset> Offset from which start the search
    -t, --type <typeStr> Type of data to be searched

      Yet, searching in Dolphin using Find does not.

      Just tried Find in Dolphin after having issued baloosearch from the console. Find returns results, but the results are false. The Find options are Content and Everywhere. I searched on the word cancer and five files were returned, none of them having anything to do with cancer.

        What seems to work at here...

        The filename search is finding things...




        The content search is finding words from the text and the html files...




        I'm not sure if there are file indexer for the pdf etc files ?
        (Older: We need more Indexers - http://vhanda.in/blog/2013/05/we-need-more-indexers/ )

          Okay, that makes sense. I opened and searched through the matches and found the word cancer in each of them. So the Find in Dolphin using Baloo does work. However, the Find does not locate matches in my email, even though baloosearch -e does. I believe that the included folders I'm using do include my email folders.

            I don't think dolphin searches emails. How about when you use krunner (Alt-F2), which does?

                Well I'll be, searching on email content in krunner does work. Why won't Find in Dolphin work for emails, when baloo can/does index email.

                  I presume that it is deliberate, that dolphin only searches files. I realise that it used to search the entire nepomuk db.

                    Yah, developer list confirms its deliberate - people didn't like non file results showing up in Dolphin, which makes sense to me.

                    If you don't mind building from source, there is milou, an excellent plasma search widget that shows categorised results (Vide, Emails, documents etc). Quite flexible, I have it bound to Meta-S. Its in extra gear at the moment but I believe its planned for inclusion in 4.13 eventually.

                      About pdf indexing

                      The search through the Dolphin is showing so many hits (at here) that it needs the 'Search For Documents' option to limit the results - the Milou seems to show the most recent ().

                        Well, I'm a guy who for good or bad, takes many things "at face value". So, for me, a search/find feature should do just that; search on and find what I am looking for, not what developers think I want to search/find.

                        No matter. I can accept the limitations of Find in Dolphin. I do not limit myself to single utilities when more than one exists to accomplish the desired task. Knowing that krunner can search email is cool. I also have the 'big guns' of searching at my disposal: locate (command line utility) and Recoll (the Battleship in ones search armada).

                          You missed out Milou. and it does work, just add it to the panel and away you go.

                            Exactly. Dolphin is a file organizer; it searches for and in files.

                            Want to search for emails? How about using the search function in KMail. That's what it's there for, after all:
