    KWin crashes using OpenGL w/kernel 3.13.0-20

    On my HP 64-bit install.

    Up till yesterday, I was using OpenGL 2.0 as the compositing type. Now KWin crashes if I try to use any of the listed OpenGL versions. Given I was able to use OpenGL and now I can't, what's the likely cause?

        Well, your batch of updates on the 29th doesn't include a newer Intel driver for X, so it appears we can rule that out. KWin and some of its GL-related libraries were updated. I wonder if this is at least a contributor to your problem. The problem may work itself out in a day or two, assuming that the bugs are temporary. Or you might try some surgical downgrades of various kwin-* or libkwingl* packages.

          Yeah, I figure that because OpenGL had worked, that a later upgrade of package-x (or packages-x) will get it working again. For now, XRender is what I have to use. I loose only a few desktop effects, but the most important effect -- window transparency -- works with XRender.

          What I find interesting, is that OpenGL does work on my 32-bit install of 14.04. Both laptops have Intel Integrated Graphics, but on the 32-bit, I have a Display Controller in addition to the VGA compatible controller. On the 64-biit install, I don't have a Display Controller.

            What I find interesting, is that OpenGL does work on my 32-bit install of 14.04. Both laptops have Intel Integrated Graphics, but on the 32-bit, I have a Display Controller in addition to the VGA compatible controller. On the 64-biit install, I don't have a Display Controller.
            Can you elaborate on this -- what are "Display Controller" and "VGA compatible controller"?

              I had this problem yesterday and after trying various things found that it was the new kernel causing the crashes. Going back to 3.13.0-19 makes it work.

                Wow, that's interesting. One commenter in the bug indicated that reverting to 3.13.0-19 didn't fix the problem.

                      The process I used (if I remember correctly), after booting into 3.13.0-19 open system settings - desktop effects.
                      Click the box for "Enable desktop effects at startup" and Apply. I then had an error message about several effects can't be loaded, I just dismissed that then used the shortcut ALT+SHIFT+F12 and it turned on and has been working since.

                              I created a bug report running ubuntu-bug kernel from the console. That bug was just confirmed.
