    No Audio from Internal Speakers. 3.5mm Headphone Jack Works.

    I just switched from Ubuntu 13.10 to Kubuntu 13.10, using a different, newly formatted drive. I wasn't having any issues with audio in Ubuntu 13.10. I initially had switched to Kubuntu 13.04 and upgraded to 13.10 because for some reason I couldn't successfully create a bootable USB drive for 13.10.

    As the title suggests, I'm not getting any audio output from my internal laptop speakers. I know the speakers are working because if I switch back to my old drive (still has Ubuntu on it) the speakers work. If I plug in headphones the audio works (through the headphones, of course).

    Any ideas what I can do to fix this? While the internal speakers aren't vital to my laptop's role, they are an appreciated luxury.

    [SOLVED]A BIOS setting was forcing a sound to be played on boot. For some reason which I do not understand, this was causing issues for the audio drivers. After disabling this BIOS setting, audio works again. Thank you all for the help!

    Sometimes, I have seen audio devices with the max volume set to mute or very very low. You can check this by installing alsamixer (if it is not already present), and run that command in a terminal. From there you can look at some hardware volume levels and turn them up if needed.

    This I think is a known issue, though I do not know if there are any current bug reports on this in Kubuntu.

    time to go look, this is at the minimum rather annoying.

      I spent hours troubleshooting this yesterday and didn't see an official bug report for Kubuntu.

      Unfortunately running alsamixer didn't reveal anything like you described.
      In alsamixer I have the following:

      Master Volume
      Headphones
      Speakers
      PCM
      Mic
      Mic Boost
      S/PDIF
      Auto-Mute Mod
      Internal Mic
      Internal Mic

      I've unmuted everything and put everything to max volume. S/PDIF only has option to mute or unmute, but not adjust volume levels. I've tried several variations of muting and unmuting playback devices. Also verified that my sound card was selected and everything was being displayed.

      Any other suggestions?

        have you checked you sound levels in the kmixer (its in the system tray). your speakers might just be set to a low volume there. either way you should use veromix widget for sound mixing instead since it works with pulseaudio better (more info here)

        you might also want to check System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio And Video Settings -> Audio Hardware Setup

        select your card and be sure the Connector is set to "Speakers " or "Analog Output".

          I tried everything mentioned above and had no luck, so I started taking some probably unnecessary measures to identify the problem.

          Long story short, the problem arises only upon installing the "additional packages" downloaded with the Kubuntu 13.04 Installer.
          **Edit: Didn't change anything to my installation and after a couple of reboots (and disabling the KDE Wallet thing) my audio is no longer working :\. Any ideas based off of this new information?

          I now have audio working, but I'm now only on Kubuntu 13.04. For anyone else who may have this problem now or in the future, here's what I've found so far. I'll update this as I find more information regarding the problem.

          I reformatted my drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium (W7HP) and all of the drivers available for the laptop. I still wasn't getting any audio. However, this time I switched back to my old drive (dual boot W7HP and Ubuntu 13.10 with KDE) and audio wasn't working. I messed with it a bit (honestly not sure what I did other than toggle a bunch of mutes and volume settings) and got some unnerving feedback between my microphone and speakers. I then disabled listening to the internal mic and audio started working perfectly. However, switching back to the new drive still had no audio.

          I then decided to set up my dual boot (Kubuntu 13.04 and W7HP) to see if I could at least get audio working in Kubuntu 13.04. When I boot Kubuntu 13.04 from my flash drive, audio works perfectly. After installing, however, audio stopped working and I couldn't figure out any configuration of settings to get it working again. I then narrowed it down to the "additional packages" that the installer automatically downloads and installs, because those aren't included in the bootable copy. Bingo. I'm now running the base Kubuntu 13.04 and it's working beautifully. As I narrow it down to a specific package I'll update this thread.

            I, personally, have seen this with a LOT of distros.

            a) internet works when the installer is working
            b) sound is working when in live cd
            c..... install the blighter and the sound does not work and the internet does not work....the last time was with a "Wheezy" thing....so help me gaaawwwd@@@ when it was the live cd EVERYTHING worked....but install... i ditched the thing and went back to an older version of Kubuntu.

              now you have me wondering if you open jockey (additional drivers tool) does it show that you have any optional non-free drivers? im not sure what else in the "additional packages" selection could be causing your problem.

              why did you disable the kwallet (just wondering)

                I'm not all that familiar with different Linux distributions yet, so the fact that this is the only time I've seen this means nothing. However, your brief outline fits my problem exactly, woodsmoke.

                Jockey shows that no additional drivers are in use and it doesn't list any as available. It's just a couple of blank selection boxes.

                After either rebooting or locking the account, sometimes a KDE window pops saying my audio devices have been removed and asks if I want it to forget them permanently. I click "No" every time.

                I'm not familiar with KWallet yet, and it was prohibiting me from accessing my wireless networks so I disabled it until I can go back and familiarize myself with it. Re-enabling KWallet makes no difference to audio. I'm going to try installing KUbuntu 12.04 and see if the problem exists there too.

                UPDATE: 12/31/13 ~9:25PM PST Turns out there's a setting in my bios for playing an audio file during boot. Disabling this setting appears to have resolved the problem for Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 Home Premium. I'll update this thread and mark it as [SOLVED] when I've tested this resolution with KUbuntu 13.10. (I ran Ubuntu 12.04 instead of KUbuntu because my local ISO for KUbuntu 12.04 wasn't working to create a bootable USB drive. The audio behaved exactly the same in Ubuntu 12.04 as it did in KUbuntu 13.04 and 13.10.)
