What is the system country ? The first option of the country pulldown.
Your kdeglobals /1/ file ?
1) owned you by you, not by the root.
2) has the line /2/:
1. The kdeglobals = ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals[Locale]
Country=mu
2. If your system country is the Mauritius then there should not be the "Country=mu" line.

During the installation of Kubuntu, a map of the world shows where you can select your country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ku...(Timezone).png
It appears that the country we choose there has no effect.

Hello. What version of Kubuntu did you install?

(with the kubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso - virtualbox)
Picking the default language for the computer
Picking the English /1/.
Picking the time zone - Mauritius Time Zone- not the country.
and the keyboard layout
The First boot
The language is English and the keyboard is English (US) -> country is the USA.
Picking the Mauritius as the country.
Reboot...
The second boot
The country is the Mauritius and the currency is the Mauritius Rupee (MUR).

ah ok. I thought the installer sets the country. In fact it only sets the time zone.
However, in the description of the 2nd picture, it says "so that the system can use appropriate display conventions for your country".

But that second screen is for 'Time Zone', so it's the time display format for the selected geo-location that is being set, not the language.
