    Black screen with "Desktop Effects" option.

    So I'm playing around with my brand new kubuntu HDD install settings, I go into K menu, settings, desktop and I enable the Desktop Effects, I click "apply" and suddenly my screen goes black, I wait and wait and nothing happens.

    I pressed ctrl-alt-backspace and was able to log out and restart my PC but when i log in same result: black screen.

    I press ctrl-alt-backspace, and activate the "failsafe"(?) option type of session but there is an error and it doesn't work.

    Can anyone please recommend a solution please?

    Re: Black screen with &quotesktop Effects" option.

    reboot
    at the prompt hit ESC
    select the repair boot
    then select the xfix

    That should disable the desktop effects

      Tried it but didn't work, got a glimpse of the desktop for a brief moment but screen went right back to black (actually it's white).

      Any other recommendations?

        I'll take a SWAG. At your user prompt,
        Code:
        rm .ICEauthority
        then
        Code:
        startx

            If the problem is: System settings > Desktop > Enable desktop effects => Black screen

            Maybe this helps:

            When you are in the login screen - don't login - press: Ctrl + Alt + F1.
            This should start virtual console /1/.

            Login in the text mode. After you are in, type:

            Intrepid or later:
            Code:
            nano ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
            <USER> is your username

            My kwinrc (Intrepid Ibex, KDE 4.1.1) has
            [$Version]
            update_info=kwin_on_off.upd:kwin_on_off,kwin.upd:k de3.0r1,kwin.upd:kde3.2Xinerama,
            kwin_focus1.upd:kwin_focus1,kwin3_plugin.upd:kde3. 2,kwin_focus2.upd:kwin_focus2

            [Compositing]
            Enabled=true

            [Desktops]
            Name_1=
            Name_2=
            Name_3=Desktop 3
            Name_4=Desktop 4
            Number=4
            ....
            Change
            Enabled=true
            to
            Enabled=false
            save and exit nano.

            Press: Ctrl + Alt + F7. Now you should be in the graphical login screen. Login - do you get black screen ?
