Desktop as Cube

What I hoped for with the cube was functionality. For exaple, applications on the cube could be clicked and used. The cube as a desktop. This seems to me to offer an additional dimension to KUBUNTU that some might prefer to use. I wonder if the idea is original.

No, your idea is definitely not original--and I say that because I've responded to basically the exact same question on two DIFFERENT forums in the past week or two.

The advantage of a cube animation for or during changing between desktops is in the eye of the beholder.
Strictly speaking there is no advantage, in a more liberal way you could say it causes awareness.

Yes the cube can be sized as a percentage of the screen resolution.

About the hover above cube mode, a couple of years ago I showed this to my GF who is absolutely horrible with computers and for the first time she realised how you can switch between several active applications without first shutting down the one presently in focus.

As a matter of fact, you can use applications on the cube, just check it out with a video running, it will continue playing while the orientation of the cube changes.
Otherwise, please explain what you had been hoping for.

"Windows hover above cube" means that if you have a window open, say Dolphin, it appears to hover just above the the side of the cube instead of being part of it. This is best demonstrated if you turn your cube into a tube or sphere.

Ok solved it! Just a few more key presses. The cube is impressive, not so sure it's too functional but it is fun.

yes just a fun way to switch desktops ,,,,,ctrl+F11 to get the cube>arrow key to rotate>enter to the desktop,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,not as fast as ctrl+F3 to get desktop 3 ctrl+F1 to get desktop 1 bla bla

I can sort of get a 'cube' desktop, ie if I roll the center mouse button the cube sides spin round but it's as if I'm looking at the cube directly face on, I don't get the '3D' cube shown in the video. I have to admit I did get a 3D cube a while back but it seems no more. How do you get the 3D effect? What settings etc are needed. I'm new to kubuntu but not new to ubuntu, I moved to gnome from kde when I first installed ubuntu many years ago.

Go to "System Settings"-> "Desktop Effects"-. "All Effects and click where indicated.




That will bring up this window where you can set it up the way you like it.

I have not noticed that in the cube. I don't know how to assign keys to the sphere or tube

Thank you for the screen shot.

I was disappointed to learn that I cannot gain functionality from the cube. This would be a step forward and make it 'useful' rather than just a cosmetic feature.

Can the cube be sized.

Yes, That works, and a second Ctl+F11 returns the desktops.

However, I have set my desktops to use individual widgets. I now find that if I place an icon on one desktop it is appearing on all.

system settings>workspace behaviour>virtual desktops check the tick box for "Different widgets for each desktop" ,,,,,,,this is allso where you can add or remove desktops .

you cant ,,,,,it's just a cute way of changing desktops and freaking out friends

Posting a screenshot of the cube may help clarify what you're seeing.

In the meantime, do you have your settings to show the desktops' names as you rotate the cube? If not, try changing that--it'll let you confirm that you're actually seeing different desktops.
