Black Screen when enabling Desktop Effects

Hi. I installed Kubuntu 10.04 from scratch and everything was fine but I noticed that Desktop Effects were turned off by default. I, then, tried to enable them but I couldn't. I read somewhere that I needed to check "Disable effects compatibility" or something like that. When I did that and tried to enable the effects using XReader, it succeeded but a notification appeared that many of the effects (like Cover Flow, for example) did not work out. So, I tried using OpenGl instead of XReader, and then the screen went black. If I click randomly, or use Alt-Tab, some windows appear for a short time, but even then, they look bad, but for most of the time, it's just black screen. How can I fix this so I can use Desktop Effects with OpenGL? Or at least be able to go back to my previous configuration?

I should mention that I have a NVIDIA's Geforce 9800 GT, and I am using NVIDIA propietary drivers (195.x). Thanks!
