I did try to search the forums for this but came up empty.
I'm experiencing a display problem where KDE 9.10 basically runs fine but just some of the menus contain garbage for display.
I can recreate this problem is Ubuntu 9.10 by switching the visual effects from normal to none. This will cause some of the pop-up notification boxes to display garbage.

Solved my own problem.
From within Ubuntu went to System > Preferences > Look & Feel > Desktop > Desktop Effects. Enabled (put a check in the box) for option 'enable desktop effects'.
