    Simple Samba home network problems

Hi what i'm wanting to do should be dead easy but having huge problems...

I have a linux box and a macbook running os x.

My linux box has a lot of storage and files and all my work/movies/music etc on there so it'd be awesome to access it from the macbook...

I turned the simple samba thing on in dolphin on the right click menu for my home dir.

then on mac i connect with apple/K and smb:/ip

and it all shows up great. but in finder it's all read only. i can't make folders or write to the linux box.

i've turned on "windows sharing" on the mac and navigated in dolphin to smb:/ip_of_macbook and that works fine and i can read/write etc no probs.

i just wanted to check with you guys how to make everything secure so my neighbours or whoever aren't getting in and also get it so my mac can write to my linux box. and just make everything clean/tidy and how it should be as i don't really know what i'm doing and i've tried to set it all in the guis cos I'm lost in the terminal...

    thanks for any help! cheers.
Working...
