kmediafactory hardy menu image problem

I've been using kmediafactory to create dvds for a while and quite happily. Since upgrading to Hardy when I try to create a menu, the preview image (and the subsequent dvd) give me a black image, sometimes with some of the text visible. The menu can be navigated if you know how it is supposed to work. This happens whether I use a plain template or customize the image.

I'm using a fully updated installation of Kubuntu 8.04 on AMD 64 machine.

Any one have any suggestions?
or better solution for creating dvd menus?
