Boot problems - cannot access tty

Can someone help me? I had Kubuntu 6.06 loaded and things were working fine but now when I try to boot up, it starts the boot and begins going through the normal steps but then I get a messages as follows: /bin/sh Can’t access tty Job control turned off


I have no idea what caused the machine to develop this problem.
