Seriously, you’re giving me “corporations can do no wrong”? :eyeroll:

And, BTW, I wrote in my OP that I use Chrome only for testing.

Chrome is owned by Google, they can do whatever they want with their property - no amount of complaining is going to change that. The good news is, you're on Linux.. and you can easily undo any changes Chrome makes to your system. You also have the right to choose another browser - do other browsers exhibit this same behavior? Focus on the solution rather than the problem.

Then don't install it. Or change the default behavior. That's what freedom loving Linux users do.

One thing that has been annoying about my otherwise pretty painless Chrome installation is that the Google browser — without asking for permission — has specified itself as the system-wide default app for a bunch of file types, including PDFs opened in Dolphin.

Well, that’s the sort of thing many of us freedom-loving Linux users frown upon.

I stand by my belief. Do your own research. Question authority.

Not nearly enough said on this and I am being polite but emphatic.

When warranted, criticism should be rendered. Especially without proof that a business is deliberately engaging in illegal activity. "Everybody knows ..." is not proof.

There's not a company on the face of this earth that does not try to get some advantage over others, including those with whom it does business. If you don't feel your privacy is being respected, then quite frankly, you have no business being on the internet. The ancient Romans as ruthless as they could be, still had the best advice ever, Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware.

You can dislike a company. You don't have to do business with a company you dislike. That's a choice, but do not criticize those who do choose to engage with such companies.

Isn't that, by implication, contradictory? I mean that plainly it seeks to criticize.

I'm an advocate of personal privacy. In particular and in this instance, online privacy. YMMV, but it is your choice... for now.
I don't believe these forums exist to force our beliefs/opinions/views on others. If you have nothing productive to add to the conversation, then perhaps you should bow out. Criticism, fear and doubt are NOT productive.
