    Video problem after routine update

After whatever update came down the pipe yesterday (April 30), I am having strange video problems. When an application window opens, the video starts flickering black. If I drag the window all over the desktop, the flickering stops. I have tried messing with compositor settings, (I did turn off screen edges) but nothing seems to make this go away. I have a backup version of the system that was done April 29, and it does not have the problem, so likely not a hardware problem. The upgrade, as far as I can tell from the log, was a bunch of curl stuff, not sure how that could fry the video.

This system has an nvidia gts240 card and the 340.76 driver. The card is too old to install the 346 driver. And besides, it's the same driver and card on both the old system and the current system.
