cannot connect to ad hoc network

I'm trying to connect my desktop to the internet through my laptop using an ad hoc network created on the laptop. The laptop is Windows 7. The desktop is 14.04. I am using the default knetworkmanager(though I might have borked some settings while trying to get it to work. I can't tell). There is no ethernet option unfortunately. The only option is connecting wirelessly through the laptop. I looked through others reports, but nothing helped. When I try using the applet, I can't "connect" even after setting up the profile. the enter key doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure where to go from here, I tried through the terminal as well but I'm not sure it's configured correctly and don't know how.

    here is
