I apologize for taking more of your time. I could not figure out how to mark this thread "Abandoned". The only choice I could find was "Solved". I abandoned 12.04 and installed 14.04.1 a couple of days ago. Now I'm trying to set it all up. Hence the post about KMail in the 14.04 Software section that you have also taken up . I won't have time to try the solution you suggested until tomorrow. Thanks. lcharles

It might be a good idea to eliminate the duplicate entries that appear in the warning messages at the end of the update run. Please copy/pasta the outputs of the following two commands:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
tail -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

Muon has certainly shown it can cause problems. I have a bit of trepedation about using command line because if I look at the man pages it's not at all clear I can't do more serious damage using the commands incorrectly. So for example upgrading packages, vs. upgrading my whole OS say from 12.04 to 14.04, or removiing a kernel after a kernel upgrade. Does 'upgrade' run all of the steps that install's the new kernel and updates grub like the Muon update manager does? I'd really like not to use my system to experiment on.
Anyway I just tried apt-get update and it ran to completion this time without hanging so I'm not sure if the output is relevant any more. Here it is:
larry1204@larry1204:~$ sudo apt-get update

Thanks for the explanation.
But it turns out there is another problem that has come up in the curse of fixing this. My repo's won't update. Thiings truck along fine for a while then the update freezes. When I cancel I get an error: "Undable to down load the following packages:"

You had some packages in an indeterminate state -- most likely unpacked but not yet installed. apt-get -f install analyzes the current state of all packages and attempts to make repairs. In your case, it worked exactly like it should.

I seemed to have solved the problem but I don't understand what I did. In the output from "autoremove" was a line run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these problems. When I ran it I was prompted to OK that I was installing un verified packages. Which I did. That seems to have solved the problem. But what was wrong in the first place and what did I do to fix it?

12.04 update failed, package libpostproc52 broken
The recent 12.04 update froze. So after a while I closed the update window. I had noticed that there was a new kernel, 3.2.0-67 but it wasn't listed in the grub list. So I did update-grub and it appeared in the menu list. When I try to boot into it I can't get to the desktop. So I booted back into -65. When I run Munon update I get a window that says Libav video post procesing library needs to be updated. When I try this I get an error message:
The following package has not been verified by its author. Downloading untrusted packages has been disallowed by your current configuration
Muon won't let me remove the new kernel. If I run apt-get update from a terminal I get:
larry1204@larry1204:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for larry1204:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
I I try autoremove I get:
larry1204@larry1204:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libpostproc52 : Depends: libavutil51 (< 4:0.8.12-99) but 4:0.8.13-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is installed or
libavutil-extra-51 (< 4:0.8.12.99) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.
If I search for libpostproc52 in Muon it's listed as broken. If I try to remove it I get that his requires chages to other packages which are listed as:
Install
libavutil-extra-51
libpostproc-extra-52
remove
libavutil51
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Which is moot since it won't let me do it anyway.
So I figure it's time to stop blundering around and get some help.Last edited by lcharles; Jul 20, 2014, 04:27 PM.Tags: None
