How to get tree view as default in Kate, Gwenview and other programs

I think the tree view of the file structure for opening, closing, copying, saving and so forth of files is the cat's whiskers, and I am a cat lover.

But I can find no way to make this the default view in Kate or Gwenview, or in System Settings. You can set it for one file open in either program, but when you go to open another, it has returned to the default non-tree view. Very annoying.

Can anyone tell me how to do this?
