I woke an old computer up from the dead this weekend. It runs kubuntu 8.10! :o
What would be the best way to get it up to date... multiple upgrades or reinstall?
If I reinstall, can I keep /home/ and similar partitions or will this just create a big mess of version inconsistencies?

well the upgrade path is gonna be a pain!
i would just reinstall (after a back up what's needed)
edit: about the /home you might want to copy your .kde folder to kde_bak) and then delete it.. (might be best to just redo settings depending on what u really have set)

The crucial issue is going to be whether you were running KDE 4.0 or KDE 3.5 in Hardy. My guess is that you were running KDE 3.5 (because if you were running KDE 4.0, you definitely would have upgraded). If you are attempting to go from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.4, upgrading is really not a possibility. You will have to change ALL of your configuration files (both those in /home/<yourname/.kde/*, also called ~/*, and those in /etc/*). Accordingly, I would suggest backing up your personal files in the ~/* tree, and expecting to spend some time working on System Settings, after doing a fresh install.
