xserver keeps restarting with voodoo4 4500

When using detected card in xorg.conf : "tdfx" xserver keeps restarting
only when changing to "vesa" the xserver starts and login screen appears

The same thing on my nVidia systems. I can't get it to boot in either normal or Safe Graphics. Has anyone had problems with nVidia? My i915 graphic card system does great!
