    failed to load session ubuntu

    Hello All,

I just did a clean install of 12.04 and everything went fine. Then I started adding some software packages and was asked to restart so I did.
But then I got the error "failed to load session ubuntu".
So after searching around a bit I found a post that said to do the following:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
    sudo apt-get -f install
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-desktop
    sudo reboot
    sudo apt-get install gnome-session
    sudo apt-get install lightdm
    sudo apt-get install unity-greeter
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Well, that sort of worked. Now I can log on, but I am in the ubuntu desktop.

So my question is, how do I get back to KDE w/o getting the same error?

    Thanks,

    Craigbert
    Thanks,

You've basically installed Ubuntu with Gnome and Unity. The KDE desktop is kubuntu-desktop and the login manager is kdm.

      oshunluvr,

      Thanks for the reply...

So to switch it back to KDE do I just need to do:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure ?
      Thanks,

Once you install kubuntu-desktop you should be able to log into KDE and make it your default. You can still use KDE from gdm or lightdm but if you want kdm, then do sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

So do I have to re-install kubuntu-desktop? I just assumed it was still there since that is what I started out with...
          Thanks,

OK. So kdm is back. But now I have the Unity Desktop top. So I ran dpkg-reconfigure kubuntu and that did nothing.
I am still getting the kdm logon with the Unity Desktop.

            Thoughts?
            Thanks,

            Craigbert

OK. Got it working now. I just had to change the desktop I was logging into on the kdm login screen.

              Thanks for everyone's patience.
              Thanks,

Since those last couple of post were only 3 minutes apart not much patience required
