    Epson ET-4750 scanner driver installation

Greetings. Full specs for my 16.04 system can be found in my profile. Technically, I'm a New Guy. I'm willing to dig around and try things, but I do not speak the Linux shorthand language, and do not yet have memorized all the unspoken but necessary preparatory motions. For me, no step is too small to be assumed and thus undocumented.

Anyway, I've got an Epson ET-4750 wireless printer/scanner. I'm trying to install Epson's scanning utility, wirelessly.

Printing is not a problem. All of the usual programs from which I might want to print -- Open Office; Kate; Okular, etc. -- find the ET-4750 and execute print jobs with no problem. I did not need to install any printer drivers; as far as printing is concerned, it was totally plug-and-play. The problem is connecting with the ET-4750 scanner. EPSON provides out-of-the-box scanner utilities for Windows and MacOS, but not for Linux.

XSane and SimpleScan are intstalled. Each of them indicates it cannot locate any scanning devices (yes, the ET-4750 is powered up and executes wireless print jobs). A check with scanimage and sane-find-scanner confirms:

    Code:
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$ sudo scanimage -L
    [sudo] password for newguy:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$
    Code:
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$ sudo sane-find-scanner
    [sudo] password for newguy:

    # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
    # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
    # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

    # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
    # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

    # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
    # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
    # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

    # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

    # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
    # can't be detected by this program.
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$
So, I turned to Epson to find their Linux scanner driver package:

    I started here:

Can confirm that the "all-in-one package" says it supports the ET-4750. I ignored the printer drivers and downloaded the 16.04/32-bit scanner driver package:

Using Ark, I extracted the downloaded .zip archive. The readme file contains this instruction for installation:

Change to the folder where you downloaded the scanner driver bundle,
extract it and install all components with

    ::

    tar xaf imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb.tar.gz
    cd imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb
    ./install.sh

    in a terminal window.
So that's what I did. I ignored the first command because I had already extracted the .zip file, using Ark. I started with the second command:

    Code:
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads$ cd imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads/imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb/install.sh

I'm not sure what to make of the several messages at the end of the installation routine. I assume the "doesn't support architecture i386" is irrelevant to me, as my system is i686 architecture. But I really have no idea, and I rely upon the wisdom of everyone else here to clue me in.

Anyway, the installation failed. Why do I say that? Because a search for Imagescan in Muon comes up empty; the Imagescan program shows up nowhere in the GUI program menus; and because Konsole says Imagescan cannot not be removed due to the fact that it has not been installed in the first place:

    Code:
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$ cd Downloads
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads$ ls
    FireShot imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg --remove imagescan
    [sudo] password for newguy:
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove imagescan which isn't installed
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads$
Thinking I might have made a misstep along the way, I wiped the slate clean and started over. I sent the downloaded packages to trash, and returned to Epson to get the driver. For reasons I can't explain but may be related to the fact that I did a fresh -- and thus possibly slightly different -- web search, I found myself at a different front door at Epson:

I downloaded the Ubuntu 32-bit package. I'm not quite sure what to make of the "(i386)" designation on that package, as my architecture is i686; but I don't know if that's relevant.

Once I extracted the package with Ark, I noticed that the package name is different from the package name of my first attempt:
    iscan-bundle-1.0.0.x86.deb

Except for the difference in the name of the package (and whatever might be inside), the package installation instructions are identical to those that accompanied my first attempt, with imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb

And once again, the installation failed, and appeared to crash upon the same rocks as did the first installation attempt:

    Code:
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~$ cd Downloads
    newguy@newguy-Dell-System-XPS-L321X:~/Downloads$ ls

Just yesterday in the 17.10 forum there was a post that appeared, possibly, to be relevant to this issue, but I must admit the discussion had too much inside-linux shorthand for me to get any traction.

    Thank you for your time.

first I would go back and get the first driver you had , it looks to be the newest with a date of 4-19-2018.

after you find it again , what happens if you just rite click the "imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb" and in the context menu that will open click in "open with" > "qapt package installer" ?

Thank you, Vinny, for your reply.

I have downloaded the package again. I obtained it from here. It arrived in Dolphin as imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb.tar.gz.

When I right-click on the imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb.tar.gz, the right-click menu provides no options for Open With.

After using Ark to extract the archive, Dolphin contains a new folder, named imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb. When I right-click that folder, the Open With options are Dolphin, Gwenview, and Other. When I select Other, The Choose Application window includes a search window. When I type qapt into the search window, there are 3 results:

      qapt-batch
      qapt-deb-installer
      qaptwoker3

When I select qapt-deb-installer, I get this error message:

Could not open <filename>/home/newguy/Downloads/imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x86.deb</filename>. It does not appear to be a valid Debian package file.

OK then I see where I was , misled .

hear , do this ,,,,,,,you can skip the parts you have already done .

I , DL'd the file "imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb.tar.gz" cut it , pasted it in a folder named test.

or more accurately " /home/vinny/Downloads/check/test/" then right clicked the "imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb.tar.gz" and "extract hear" this gives me

        Code:
        vinny@vinny-Bonobo-Extreme:~/Downloads/check/test$ ls
        imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb.tar.gz
my mistake was thinking that "imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb" was a Debian package file (what Ubuntu uses for installable packages) and why I asked you to use Qapt on it , it is not it's a folder .

so go into that folder and now we have

        Code:
        vinny@vinny-Bonobo-Extreme:~/Downloads/check/test/imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb$ ls
        core install.sh plugins README.rst
Aa hears the install.sh , so now you can run it from hear with

        Code:
        sudo ./install.sh
        see how that dose .

As far as I can tell, this attempt is an exact replay of my first attempt, as described in my OP. Same result, too -- namely, that the installation failed. A search for Imagescan in Muon produces no search result.

as far as I can see that ppa.launchpad.net/varlesh-l/papirus-pack is not working and may be mucking up your being able to update at all or maybe not .

you can run (from in the same directory as befor)
              Code:
              sudo ./install.sh --dry-run
to get some error messages maybe and see what it wants to install , I got that from the "readme" in the imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb , useful things those "readme's"

              @hear it gives me this

              Code:
              vinny@vinny-Bonobo-Extreme:~/Downloads/check/test/imagescan-bundle-ubuntu-16.04-1.3.28.x64.deb$sudo ./install.sh --dry-run

the part in red is what it needs to install from the repos and the purple what it's installing from the DL'd archive.

Thank you, Vinny. At this point, I need to know what I should do with this information. What is my next step? I'm willing to go off and study, but I'm not sure where I should go. Any direction you can provide is appreciated.

I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but it appears that sane (and by default scanimage/xsane) doesn't currently support your scanner (wireless or otherwise.) You can refer to http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html for the listing of currently supported scanners.

                    cheers,

Hi, Bill, thanks and yes, SANE's lack of support for the ET-4750 is noted in my OP. That's why I've attempted to obtain the ET-4750 driver package directly from Epson, and to install Epson's Imagescan bundle.

I mean, I am under the impression that going directly to Epson for the driver and scanner utility is the necessary thing to do if SANE is of no help. Am I wrong about that?

Hopefully, that's the case... But usually, most vendors supply backend scanner drivers and it's up to the developers to adapt applications to work with the vendor supplied drivers. If you find this to be the case, you might look at the sane documentation on your system for further information.

For specific manpages on the sane backends, you can find a listing of them on your system as follows:

                        Code:

                        All the best!
