sorry bro i forgot to add the info, it was the ati-catalyst-13.0.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64 drivers directly from the ati driver download page i used the ati provided instructions aswell as a little Googleing when i had to link the local.h file to the build dir, i havent had chance to delve into the dkms issue its not helped when i have to do it via cli and i cant get a gui to work so no copy and paste at the mo

I don't think it even builds on 16.04. The catalyst drivers has been abandoned for some time. You can use the open source driver.

Also, it may no longer support your gpu. What does the Driver Manager suggest to install? That tool in System Settings will detect and suggest ti best driver for you, if it is not already being used.
Driver installs downloaded from the manufacturer are usually problematic, in my experience. The distros usually have the proper build tweaks etc all figured out.
Again, it does not look like fglrx supports the card at all anymore, so the free driver is likely your only choice.

Ati/AMD are terrible at supporting their hardware on Linux for a reasonable length of time, as Nvidia does, but the free driver is of much higher quality imo than the free nouveau drivers for Nvidia.

Catalst driver is retired for sometime now, today every card supported by it should work just as well or better with the open source driver

basicaly i need to be able to use the HDMI output on my laptop it is the ATI Radeion HD 4570 when i try to use the hdmi out using the pre-installed drivers the external monitor gives me a black screen with a blinking white curser cli style then goes to standby i don't get why its not working

heya raider im reinstalling kubuntu 4.0.4.4 desktop to get a working system it should also install the open source driver just not sure where to go from there

so im guessing the open source driver is installed and functioning correctly.

the displays option in the kde settings panel only detects my laptop display so how do i go about switching to my external hdmi display?

Plug in the monitor. Turn it on and you should see it the display KCM

It's always the odd-ball card. The 4570 is not mentioned in Ubuntu howto for ATI/Radeon cards:

and for all such cards on boxes running 16.04 and newer they recommend the

xserver-xorg-video-ati

package, which I assume you have already tried and it has failed. Yes/no

wasent even aware of its existence can you give me the apt-get command to install it im not on my box at the moment
