I always loved the idea of Tomahawk Player all the way back when it was first announced at Camp KDE in San Diego in 2010. The amount of music services it supports is truly impressive (and extensive)! Development stopped - seemingly - a while back but I see on GitHub changes are still being made to keep it maintained. It was initially a KDE application but seems independent now, so not sure about it being a candidate for a 'default' player, but it's certainly an interesting app nonetheless that's definitely worth checking out for the Youtube, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, Last.fm, and Google Play Music integration alone, if nothing else.

I got frustrated with Cantata as it didn't play nicely when I closed the main interface to go and sit in the system tray out of the way until I needed it again. Plus I love Clementine and it is painless to install it.

OK so it's not to bad as just a music player ,,,,,I still think a media player ,,,especially a default one ,,,so as to have just 1 on the .ISO , should do it all not just audio .

MPD continues to run after "quiting" cantata ?

and if you "quit" cantata wile it's playing ,,,,,,,the music keeps playing not good.

seeing as this thread has the only post I have made on this forum I want to follow up on the issue. Cantata has shaped up nicely in 18.04 and most (almost all) gripes have been addressed. As much as I <3 Clementine I have not found any reason to install it.

Each of the media apps has its own strengths and, without it being overtly said the devs for them get together and kind of say ok you do this and I will do that.

It depends on what you want to do.

If you want to learn the guts of music in Linux start with xmms2 and work up or start with MPD and work up.

Without putting too fine a point on it, do a search of "the best music players of ... 2018" or whatever and read the reviews of the strengths and weakenss of each.

There is one that is just bonkers on searching out each and every music file and cataloging it another is great at pulling album covers another great at lyrics another great at internet radio stations, another at recording the music and saving it in different formats...

I liked Clementine at first but now, well not so much Cantata...its ok ...

It still has the start up screen talking about MPD and asking you how to configure it. This is not beginner friendly enough for a default music player in a distro IMO. Default player shouldn't be a specialist thing. The player that should be default with KDE should be Elisa as it's quite simple and designed for KDE.
