That's it. If I click on either Desktop effects or Activities, System settings just disappears.

No logs? Have you tried launching systemsettings5 from a konsole and observing the output when it crashes?
Not a fix, but can you access Activities from the desktop right-click menu? -
After doing a dist-upgrade and a reboot, the problem has disappeared.
