An update if anyone is following this thread...

OK, so I found a workaround for the nouveau driver and its locking up issue. Adding "nouveau.noaccel=1" to the boot line stops the lock ups. It also kills desktop effects but at least I can use KDEneon again. It's noticeably jerky when re-positioning windows, etc., but useable.

I may try to go back to the nvidia driver, but an older version to see if audio becomes available. I'm hoping updates will come down that solve it. There's not a lot of locateable info out there on this (the HDMI audio) issue.

Interestingly, I was using Manjaro with the nouveau driver because it had sound, but system notifications didn't work. I don't have time right now to run down separate issues in two distros so I'll leave it be for now.

With both distros there's an odd lag whenever audio starts. I pinned it to a lag because I could go to the device testing in System Settings > Multimedia and when I clicked "Front Left" all I hear is "Left" but if I press it again I hear the full "Front Left" response. I only hear this through the HDMI audio, not the built-in audio.

Thanks Vinny, I actually think it's a kernel confliction with the driver. I did a new KDEneon install and audio works with nouveau and no crashing. I'm using 4.10 but the newest KDEneon ISO uses 4.8.

Ok, so I got tired of the nouveau driver always heating up my CPU so I rolled up my sleeves. I installed 5 kernels and went back to the nvidia driver but I started at 340 series. The first try: Kernel 4.10.0-27-generic and nvidia-340.102 and the audio worked!

So I guess I'll just stick to the older driver until something else makes me change.
