Wireless dropping out but not disconnecting

    Hey all

I have had an issue with my laptop's wireless dropping out when I'm doing anything download heavy, it does not actually disconnect just comes to a stand still and web pages etc fail to load.

I don't really know what information you need from me but the laptop is an ASUS X550JX.

    Thanks

You are probably running the rtl8821ae driver.

        Code:
        :~$ modinfo rtl8821ae
        filename: /lib/modules/4.8.0-42-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtlwifi/rtl8821ae/rtl8821ae.ko

        options rtl8821ae msi=0
        options rt8821ae int_clear=0
Then restart the network service using systemctl or log out and log back in.

              HI
no, don't have a wire connection. I use my mobile phone as a hot spot. It has unlimited 4G+ connection with an average of download 30 Mbps ans upload of average 25 Mbps.

                firstly, just a reminder:
Be aware that your tethering allowance isn't the same as your data plan. For instance, T-Mobile's unlimited data plans come with a 5GB tethering allowance. You can use as much data as you want on your phone, but once you attach a laptop, it's 5GB for the month.
if that's not your case, enter the command nmcli monitor, then start downloading, wait for it to hang, and post the output from the console, if any.

if there's nothing, post the output of nmcli connection.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I created the rtl8821ae.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ and added the 4 options listed.

I then rebooted and I'm still having connectivity issues.

I ran nmcli monitor and nmcli connection

                  here are the outputs:

You are missing the device driver name in the fourth line of /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf
                    Code:
                    options rtl8821ae ips=0
                    options rtl8821ae fwlps=0
                    options rtl8821ae msi=0
                    options int_clear=0

how do I build that device driver name? Or how do I remedy that?

...duh...I couldn't see the forest through the trees...

                      Code:
                      donald@sound-X:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf
                      options rtl8821ae ips=0
                      options rtl8821ae fwlps=0
                      options rtl8821ae msi=0
                      options rtl8821ae int_clear=0

now I'll test it for a couple of days to see if I'm having better luck...

My /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf looks like the above.

where do I put the device name?
                            lspci gives:

07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)
                            0d:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT5390 [802.11 b/g/n 1T1R G-band PCI Express Single Chip]

                            nmcli monitor gives nothing.

                            nmcli connection gives:

                            fintan@fintan-ws1:~$ nmcli connection
                            NAME UUID TYPE DEVICE

                            fintan@fintan-ws1:~$

                            Thank you!

Your wireless chip is an rt5390

I don't know if there is a driver for it.

                              Does "modinfo rt5390" give anything?
