Pasma or Not kubuntu ver 14.04

People often refer to the Plasma desktop.

I have looked in Tools under System Settings: About System, and there is no mention of Plasma. Am I using Plasma?

    Thank you
    kubuntu version: 16.04.5 LTS

    Laptop: Toshiba-Satellite-L350

Unless you have switched to another desktop shell etc, then yes, you should be.

The process 'plasma-desktop' should be running, and 'plasma-desptop -v" should tell you the version

Yes, but anonprivate's thread title and sig says they are on 14.04, where the plasma process/executable was 'plasma-desktop'

It looks like I am using Plasma:

          andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ plasma-desktop -v
          Qt: 4.8.6
          KDE Development Platform: 4.13.3
          Plasma Desktop Shell: 4.11.11
          andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$

Can I clarify a point. That is, the difference between kde desktop and Plasma Desktop.

When I view my desktop am I looking at Plasma or kde?

Am I right in assuming that whatever operating system is being used if kde is installed then the desktop appearance, before any customisation, will be identical - i.e., kde?

          How does Plasma fit in?

          Thanks

plasma is the desktop workspace part of kde 4 +
            more info here : https://www.kde.org/workspaces/plasmadesktop/

KDE is now KDESC the KDE Software Complation. KDE no longer referses to just the DE itself but all the projects under the kde umbrella . plasma, solid, dolphin, krita, etc.. you can see a more full list here on phabricator (kde build hub that all members use) https://phabricator.kde.org/project/query/all/.

if you would like to follow kde a bit more checkout http://www.planetkde.org sometime as this is where all dev blogs end up you can see what everyone is up to since when they make a blog post its posted here.

inxi is a very handy utility to see all kinds of information about your hardware and software -- highly recommended.

Interestingly, my system does not indicate Plasma:

                Code:

Use the -v3 option on inxi.

                  Code:
                  inxi -v3

                    I did.

                    andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ inxi -v 3

                    Or, without the space

                    andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ inxi -v3

Hmmmm - that's odd. What version of inxi do you have?

                      Here, it is
                      Code:
                      root@hp-350g:/# apt-cache policy inxi
                      inxi:
                      Installed: 2.3.5-1
                      Candidate: 2.3.5-1
Also, make sure you have gawk installed -- inxi uses it.

man gawk is available, so I assume that gawk is installed.

Not using sudo, I note two pieces of data:

                        andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ inxi --version
                        inxi 1.9.17-00 (2013-12-02)

                        and:

                        andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ apt-cache policy inxi
                        inxi:
