Epson Stylus SX 100 will not print

When I try to print, I see no action from the printer - it worked previously. It may be that a cartridge is too low on ink. How can I check this. The driver does not support ink monitoring and the cartridges are opaque plastic. I can't quite recall the name of the utility that sometimes works: esutil - something similar. I note from previous work that this did not give ink levels either.
