Well, thanks folks for all the ideas, but nothing worked.
I disconnected the box, took it downstairs and hooked it onto a cable and tried:
a) broken packages in synaptic, nothing was found.
b) update with Muon would not do it.
c) update with Synaptic, it was HUGE but nothing for the wifi.
d) Installed the app "wicd" from repos, it is an older app, but always worked before on this and other distros.
It found my wireless DURING the install! lol, clicked it.
e) It was in "recently installed" clicked it it had found all the networks and offered me a big menu of stuff "to do" but I just entered my password for the router and was on immediately.
f) the normal icon for wireless now has a question mark but still doesn't work.
So.... I'll keep on using Wiley for a while, i have a LOT of apps on it that I use regularly and will spend the next few weeks getting them onto Xenial and then put this drive back for "backup".
Again, thanks for the suggestions!
