    HP 3521 all-in-one driver problems

I have installed Kubuntu 15.04 on a Dell Latitude D510 with 2GB RAM. I used the HP device driver install wizard at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...20_series.html to download the Ubuntu linux version of HPLIP v 3.15.7. I followed the instructions to install my HP3521 all-in-one printer software.

When Kubuntu linux starts I receive the following error message:

    HPLIP Status Service

No system tray detected on this system

    Unable to start, exiting

When I start Simple Scan I receive the following error message:

    No Scanners detected.

I opened System Settings and clicked Printers

The information and settings are correct.

    hp-check -t reports:

    arnett@arnett-Latitude-D510:~$ hp-check -t

    1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP
supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed
    to successfully compile HPLIP.
    2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied
package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
    dependencies installed to successfully run.
    3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check
both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

    Check types:
    a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
    b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
    c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies

What do I need to do to correct the problems?

    #2
Make sure /etc/sane.d/dll.conf has net (if it's network attached) or hpaio (USB attached) listed (without a # in front of them) and all the other drivers are remarked out (have a # in front of them). Some HP devices on't like other drivers being loaded.

Have you installed "xsane"? This should be a dependency of hplip-gui IMO, but is only a "recommends". Your HPLIP install is set up to use xsane.

If you have, running xsane from konsole might give clues. However, when I do that, I get 503 lines of of errors before it starts and works successfully, so it might be hard to see what's wrong.

I removed the system tray panel and reinstalled it. HPLIP loaded properly. I then ran hp-setup 192.168.1.117 from the terminal. The printer now appears in HPLIP.

            Hp-check -t now reports:

Upon restarting the system, HPLIP loads into the system tray. Although the printer is installed and configured in the KDE system settings it does not show in HPLIP or HPLIP device manager. Why can't HPLIP find the printer?

              Huh?
Works for me. K menu -> System -> HPLIP Toolbox. Or hp-toolbox in a console. Or alt-f2 "hp".

Also, running xsane directly (K menu -> Graphics -> XSane Image scanning program) finds the device, as does Skanlite.

[Edit] When you said "HPLIP cannot find the system tray" I jumped to the conclusion that your problem was the system tray problem that is common on Vivid systems upgraded from utopic, where when we log in HPLIP says it can't find the system tray (even though it has) and exits. No, maybe your problem is "No Installed HP devices found.", despite having added it through KDE.

I've solved this problem in the past by fixing the IP address of the printer, using its control panel. Choose an IP outside the range handed out by DHCP by your router; mine is 192.168.1.200. Then run hp-setup and click "Show Advance Options", check "Manual Discovery" and type in the IP address.
Click next and I hope it finds the printer immediately. (Mine complains about not finding the Fax PPD file, and says the fax won't be set up. This is in fact a good thing for me, I have used fax once in 20 years.)

I'm having exactly the experience you describe. I just wait for hp-systray to fail, then kill the 2 processes it leaves behind, then re-launch it and it works fine.

I found a couple of things to check in order to make sure that HPLIP works right. First, delete any failed printers that failed setup. Also, make sure that the HP printer doesn't need to be reset to enable wireless communication. Then, make sure that the setup routine carries through the wireless connection setup. it should work reliably after that. Do a few scans, then restart your computer and scan something else. I used playing cards...

I'm not having any issues at all with the printer or scanner - just the tray app. The printer and scanner work perfectly whether or not the HP icon is there. I just can't check it out without going through System Settings. Really, the systray thingy is just a convenience item IMO.

Try removing the panel entirely, rebooting and reinstalling the default panel. HPLIP may load...
