    Nightmare Upgrade and Install.

the other night my brother came over and brought his laptop. he wanted me to set up some stuff in wine for him because he was afraid he would mess it up and break something. Nothing unusual about that as i handle most of the computer related things for most anyone i know providing its a linux machine. After i had set up the item in wine i noticed that it was not working correctly with his microphone (mic was needed). so i set up wine to use ALSA and still nothing so i looked at his package versions... RARING.. oh boy he needed to do a dist upgrade. so i told him about it and since he had forgotten his charger i set him up for a release-upgrade and told him to go home and connect the net and power then to continue with the command. The next day he calls me and says the computer doesn't work it just starts up to a black screen that says "No Opperating System Found". Turns out he had done the upgrade it completed and he had shut off the computer. (now the machine has 13.10 and one more upgrade for 14.04.). When i get the machine i boot it up and sure enuff it refuses to boot. i pop in my usb stick w/ 14.04 on it and start up the live disc. Start up the install and set up the disc etc.. (seperate /home partitions are so great) . Install starts i go do something for a little bit come back its ready to be rebooted. Restart and No Opperating System found!!!?!?!?!? At this point im a bit confused because i know i just did a reinstall.I then started poking around his BIOS there are not useable settings for helping this problem its a mostly unchangeable laptop bios. Now this machine is a few years old and i have set up the GPT disk and EFI booting since 11.?? when they got the machine. So i checked removed the EFI partition and let the installer (now my 3rd install) recreate it .Same Issue.. At this point im pretty sure its not a boot loader issue as the error message is from the EFI/BIOS and booting with super grub the entries from my grub.cfg boot.so what could possibly be the issue other then the machine is just not starting the bootloader. i end up copying off the /home partition and making the disk mbr and all of a sudden it works just fine. im an bit confused as to how i have been boothing via EFI for over 2 years. then its suddently wants to boot the bios way just wanted to share/vent.

Grub can some times have problems with UEFI/GPT I've found that Boot-repair is my friend at those times. fixes it 99% of the time for me anyway.
You can get it here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
and here is another solution some like : http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/refit.html

grub or any other boot loader was not being loaded from the HD. untill i changed the partition table from GPT to MBR . this machine was booting correctly using grub2 before the upgrade.
