    I also tried
Xorg -configure but that didn't get me much further
Now I installed nouveau and set the drivers in my xorg.con to nouveau instead of vesa or nvidia (what I had tried before) but I get the same: graphical login but no KDE workspace upon login (login just brings me back to the login promp page)

      Now,

I have a secondary user on my machine and I just realized that it lets me logon to that account (in KDE) but my account sstill doesn't work, so I thought permissions might be messed up in my account so I did a "sudo chown -R reg:reg /home/reg/" but that didn't change things either.... any other hints? This must be fixable somehow...

You've got too many simultaneous issues going on. If you secondary account allows log in obviously there's something wrong in your user account. Generally, deleting (renaming) the ~/.kde folder fixes most things. You should be looking through your log files for error messages - /var/log and ~/.xsession-errors at least.

You could also kill the display manager (lightdm unless you changed it to kdm) and attempt to start X from the command line after logging in as your user. This should show error messages in the console that might shed light on the source of the problem.

It's going to be difficult to trouble-shoot driver issues if you can't log into your account.

          [solved]

Yep, Thanks! Should've thought about this myself! renaming my ~/.kde directory did it!

          Thanks,
