It just sat there "forever". How long should it take for a 32 GB drive? Even though it doesn't display any progress, do I at least get a message when it's finished?

Depending on the specific options specified in the dd command, it can. If one is "wiping" by writing zeroes to disk, it will take a bit to get to 32 gb of them . It is done when you get your prompt back.

I use PartedMagic's Erase Disk program. It gives good visual feedback. It will give a time left to finish and a time for how long it has taken so far. My 16 GB PNY took close to two hours to zero-wipe.
