landeel, i just tried that, rebooted and all was good, then i tried the same avi file 5 mins later and the problems were back...that seems to be the case with everything i try, it works for a while and then its back to tearing ((
on another note i tried compiz, theres no emerald in the repos so i got the ugly compiz borders whatever they are called, but compiz seems to work and as far as i can tell the tearing is gone. anyone know where to get emerald, or if u can run compiz with kwin decorations? (im a bit confused about what the difference between decorations and compositor is but hey)
for the record im using the 313 nv drivers now, although 'additional drivers' keep telling me that no proprietary drivers are in use no matter what nvidia drivers i install

edit:i just remembered that i have a displayport cable and both my gfx card and monitor supports it...i guess that wont make a difference but i might try it tomorrow
