nvidia tearing

    Try this: edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    In Section "Device", add:
    Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"


    So it will look like this:

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "GeForce GTX 550 Ti"
    Option "DPI" "200 x 200"

    Restart xorg or reboot, and see what happens.

      its been years since i heard about xorg.conf, totally forgotten about it. however i have none, its not there

        By the way, are you sure that you enabled the nvidia driver?

          If you don't have a xorg.conf, it's very likely you're not really using nvidia drivers, because as far as I know, xorg will not default to proprietary drivers.
          Can you post your glxinfo ?

            odd, i know i installed the nvidia drivers from the 'additional drivers' thing but it says 'no proprietary drivers are in use on this system' so i installed the drivers from 'additional drivers' again and rebooted and it still says no prop drivers in use however nvidia-settings says om running drivers version 310.44

            and wobbly and cube are ubersmooth so id be surprised if they arent in use

              I didn't get an xorg.conf file or refresh option in the Display Settings either after installing the proprietary driver. I did make an xorg.conf file in nVidia Settings though, might help? I haven't tested it yet on 3D but windows were nicer. Not entirely sure what I'm doing though. >.<

              EDIT - Nope didn't work anyway. Still choppy and tearing.

                  isnt that a beta? 310 is listed as the latest one on nvidia.com. in any case i dont think its the drivers, cos the same thing happened in ubuntu/mint/gnome and it was fixed by doing smt to the window manager or compositor or whatever as i described in the original post

                  as for xorg.conf i havent had that on my system for like 6 releases

                      OK this is what I have:

                      - nVidia 313 Driver
                      - VSync enabled in Desktop Effects and nVidia Settings
                      - XOrg modified to Vert: 60 and Horiz: 68 according to my monitor (makes the desktop a smooth dream!)
                      - Tried with the disable composition hotkey too before launching the game
                      - Tried Xrender and OpenGL in Desktop Effects
                      - Refresh rate in the OS settings does not exist

                      I still get terrible tearing in 3D. SO far tested it with Surgeon Simulator and downloading Dungeon Defenders just to see if it's a game problem or not. Desktop is smooth as anything, especially after the XOrg refresh tweak, but not sure why 3D performance is not as smooth as it should be. SS13 was playable once your brain starts to filter out the problems (or nearly die laughing as you play!), but look closely and you see a lot of tearing over the screen.

                        env __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=1 yourgame
                        It used to work for me before NVIDIA made vsync on by default.

                          ok i think i found a solution.
                          firstly what i tried that did NOT work for me:
                          -genrating xorg.conf
                          -disabling/enabling vsync in nvidia-settings as well as in kde system settings, all possible combinations
                          -fiddled with all the options in system settings > desktop effects > advanced
                          -disabled compositing completely
                          - added Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
                          Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
                          to the device section of xorg.conf


                          this seems to have worked:

                          -the problem seems to be that kwin starts before the nvidia-settings are loaded, so killing kwin and then starting it again and my movies are tear free
                          -made a kwin.sh looking like:
                          killall kwin
                          sleep 1s
                          kwin

                          and added it to my startup apps
                          this seems to work, not a very nice solution though. would be interesting to hear if it works for others and if so if theres a smoother way to do this

                          on another note, in compiz settings there was a setting that solved this same problem back in ubuntu, does anybody know if compiz/emerald works with kde?
