debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

I finally got around to try to get my graphic cards to play ball and am having a issue with my radeon HD 6470M card.

My machine is a HP pavilion DV6 with icore 7 second gen.

Since some applications such as FF 8 and gimp 2.7.2 crash kwin and send me back to the login screen, probably due to the intel onboard card and 3D activated.
Plus the fan is always running.

I decided to install the prop driver with the additional drivers function.

This did solve the application crashing issue but I cannot get desktop effects to start even though it is marked as enable at startup.
I like the desktop effects

I also tried adding this:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-sw.../ubuntu/oneric

and doing:

sudo apt-get install fglrx

This seemed to work but still no desktop effects.

So I tried this:

I followed all the steps but when doing:

sh ati-driver-installer-11-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/oneiric

with the latest driver I get:

debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

and the installation stops there.

Has anyone gotten the latest ATI driver installed and been able to get switching to work properly?

I know there have been problems with switching but I was hoping they have been resolved by now.

I would also like to get dual monitors working fluidly but I have to resolve this first.
