KDE 4.3 Unofficially Released for Kubuntu

Update: 4.3.1 has been released, and it seems lot safer to upgrade to it than it initially was to upgrade to 4.3.0. See here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3106162.0

    KDE 4.3 has been released.

    Here is the Kubuntu announcement:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.3

    Warning.

These packages are only intended for advanced users, all ppa packages are unsupported. General users should wait to use KDE 4.3 in the next Kubuntu release, Karmic, or 9.10, in October. Several people had problems of all types with these packages (please browse the forum for 4.3 issues for a sample).

    Tips and workarounds.
    • There seem to be some problems with the packaging, and after the upgrade you may not be able to login (plasma was broken after the upgrade for some of us). I would recommend pre-upgrade and post-upgrade steps (see below).
    • Before the upgrade: make sure that kubuntu-desktop is installed
    • After the upgrade (before loging out or restarting the computer): run in konsole the following: sudo apt-get install -reinstall kde-core
    • If you cannot logout: go to System Settings -> Notifications and revert to Default settings. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201569

    Re: KDE 4.3 Released

You just have to love the KDE Team. From the announcement:

Packages for Jaunty are not officially supported.
That said, it should be noted, that they are telling you that KDE 4.3 is being developed for release with Karmic. That's why it isn't available as an upgrade in Jaunty or Intrepid without adding the two packport repositories.

So, if you want to bring in KDE 4.3, before it's released with Karmic, just be aware that you do so at your own risk.

Exactly. I just completed the update and the new packages fixed the broken plasma. I am not sure if they updated for a previous packaging bug, or if I caught them in the middle of uploading to the ppa. Also, at some point I manually installed some qt libraries that are part of kubuntu-desktop and were not installed (I uninstalled all the openoffice packages to save space in the tiny hard drive, which forced me to uninstall kubuntu-desktop). I am saying this in case it helps someone: if you do this upgrade, I recommend that you make sure kubuntu-desktop is installed, before the upgrade.

I must say, an annoying bug remains, in that if you upgrade from KDE 4.2.*, you may not be able to logout:
      https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201569

As a workaround, you can type in konsole: "sudo service kdm restart" (or gdm instead).

        Re: KDE 4.3 Released

Users of our stable 9.04 release can install it from the Kubuntu Backports PPA. You need both lines.

        deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main
        deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/staging/ubuntu jaunty main

Not to say that was your problem, but it should probably be in every thread for the next day or two!

Edit: They removed the extra source from the announcement...

          Hi folk,
Plasma keep crashing on login after the upgrade. I have ued both the sources lines as explained in the release notes..

In the meantime I have opened also this small ticket https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202556

          Any hints?

          Thank you

Yes, I had the same. Did you follow the recommendation of my first post? Is kubuntu-desktop installed? Also, please do a new

            Code:
            sudo apt-get update
            sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
            just in case.

Probably not because adding the second line and refreshing the sources didn't bring anything new, but very good point. I will edit the first post. Thanks!

I highly doubt this is a KDE bug.

Since I really don't know your experience I won't speculate too much, but just generally speaking, these issues come and go with new releases and they almost always are fixed with new k/ubuntu packages and never from a true bug fix... at least that is what I observe.

                  Hi,
I do personally think that it is not a fact of speculation or something like that.
I have informed the audience... If noone else can experience it the bug request will be closed...

As you know the cause may be linked to environental differences.. and in case it works in your environement and not in mine it's a bug because my environment is purely fresh install from distro release...

Maybe it is not a proprietary kde bug but it's a kubuntu one because the user can not find by himself how to use the desktop like before..

I just got 4.3 installed on 9.04. I have to say to say its awesome! Thanks to the dev teams for getting it together for us. Kubuntu gets better with every upgrade (official or not =) )

In Launchpad, but I think they will be mostly interested if it happens in Karmic ... did you follow my suggestion above?

                          The announcement > Kubuntu.org / KDE 4.3 released has:
...Packages for Jaunty are not officially supported...
Maybe this is still walid. The > kubuntu-devel -- Kubuntu Developer Discussion has a thread of the >> PPA support policy.

                            Hi,
I just wanted to point out that the official announcement @ kubuntu.org mentions only one repository. Should it be changed?
                            Cheers
