Somehow I have taken on the insane task of creating some form of simple
feedback for Kubuntu during the release cycle...
    ...
So for the Alpha 1 release of the "Kubuntu QA Feedback" plasmoid, I setup a
server on my host that does present a web based survey. I have gone ahead
and filled it with a few questions, and set it up for testing...
    ...
If you want to give it a try, download the file at:

    http://www.nixternal.com/files/kubun...dback.plasmoid

Once you have it downloaded, install it:

    plasmapkg -i kubuntu-qa-feedback.plasmoid

Then to view it, you can either add it to the desktop, or run it from the
    Plasmoid Viewer:

    plasmoidviewer kubuntu-qa-feedback
    ...

Just put up what I would consider Alpha 2. Here is what changed:...

      Hi,

I've finished creating the first set of tarballs and uploaded them to ktown
(unstable/4.2.95). Expected release is tuesday/wednesday next week.

      i all ...

apparently not everyone packaged the exact same "rc1". this is making it
really hard to sort through some of the bugs we're getting as some of the
plasma crashes should be fixed either just prior to or just after rc1
(before/after depending on the issue), but some of the rc1 packages out there
in the wild are actually a couple revs prior to the actual rc1 branching.

will there be an rc2? i know plasma at least would appreciate such a thing,
though i think we can also manage without if it's too big of a deal.

        Hi,

I've put RC2 online under unstable/4.2.96. I think we messed up the
announcement, but I would like to ask you to package it anyway and report
        possible problems.

As some of you already know, we decided at UDS to produce a new Kubuntu flavor

Kubuntu Netbook Edition is a new Kubuntu flavor optimized for netbook computers. These computers generally have small (less than 10") screens, less processing power, and less RAM/disk space than traditional laptops. The Karmic (9.10) development cycle is the first for Kubuntu Netbook Edition and there is a lot of work to do...

            Hi,

            I've uploaded 4.3 RC3 tarballs (4.2.98). they're not yet set to public, we'll
publish them somewhen tomorrow (in ~ 16-18 hours from now)...

Dirk added a fix for bug 200789 to the RC3 tarballs, they're now up. We'll
release shortly (i.e. tonight as soon as I'm done with work-work).

4.3.0 has been postponed to 4th August.

            > KDE 4.3 RC3 Release Announcement
July 22nd, 2009. The KDE Community today announced the immediate availability of KDE 4.3 RC3, a release candidate of the 3rd iteration over the KDE 4 desktop, applications and development platform.

While 4.3 already feels very stable, there still have been quite some changes to the code-base since the second release candidate. In order to have the 4.3.0 release well-tested, the release team decided to put out another release candidate and postpone the final 4.3.0 release by one week. The most notable change is probably a fix for a performance problem in Plasma, where applets would shortly freeze after being resized. This bug has been resolved by delaying the caching of rendered SVG images until after the resizing has finished...

              Alpha 3

              > Karmic Koala Technical Overview
              GRUB 2 by default

GRUB 2 is the default boot loader for new installations of Karmic, replacing the previous GRUB "Legacy" boot loader. Existing systems will not be upgraded to GRUB 2 at this time...
              ...
Some features are still missing relative to GRUB Legacy. Notable among these are lock/password support, an equivalent of grub-reboot, and Xen handling.

              Known issues

As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Karmic Alpha 3. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:...

              > Karmic Koala Alpha3 Kubuntu

New or Improved In Alpha 3
              • KDE 4.3 RC
              • Netbook
              • Arora Web Browser
              • Amarok 2.1.1
              • KPackageKit 0.4.1.1
              • K3b 1.66.0
              • Social from the Start
              • GTK+ Integration

              Known Issues
              • If you install Karmic Alpha 3 alongside Windows, the grub boot menu may not offer to start Windows.
              • If you have internal hard disk partitions aside from Ubuntu itself, GNOME will attempt to automatically mount them at startup and ask for your password. Just cancel the dialog, unless you actually want to work with them.
              • The Kubuntu Netbook Edition is missing the "install" icon on the desktop. You can start the installation from the menu.
              • The Kubuntu Netbook Edition image does not install under Windows (with wubi).

              Feedback

We want to hear what you think about the current release of Kubuntu 9.04, The Karmic Koala, Alpha 3 CD Release. We want to know if it Rocks, if it is just OK, or it is flat out wrong. No matter the feedback, as long as it is in line with the Ubuntu Code of Conduct we would like to hear it.

The image for the netbook is a bit thick for the CD. From the > Kubuntu Netbook:
                  Set Up Installation Support

Because netbooks rarely come with CD or DvD drives, we need to convert ISO images to some other medium for installation support. This can be done in Jaunty with the Ubuntu usb-creator package. In Karmic we will (soon) have a KDE version. There is also a Windows version of usb-creator planned so people who do not run *buntu on their regular computers will still be able to install Kubuntu Netbook Edition on their netbooks. A preview version of the KDE usb-creator is available from Rod Greening's PPA.

                    That makes sense, thank you.

Looks good, very fast boot and very responsive.

                    I am installing now.

                    Edit:

I wanted to dual boot with JJ so I put the karmic grub in its own partition to keep the original grub in mbr.

I forgot that karmic now comes with grub2.

Hoe do I get my grub to boot grub2?
                    There is no /boot/grub/menu.lst anymore.

Multimedia previews in Dolphin? Hmm...I thought I saw someone on the KDE forums say it was impossible. At least, for music. Something to do with Phonon.

Kopete can work with Skype? Well, I rather like that! . If memory serves, Kopete should be able to work with Facebook chat and I beleive they are working on restoring IRC capabilty. I don't think I've ever met a client quite as powerful as Kopete...

Google Gadgets? Are you kidding me? I'd love to have them!

That 'blackboard' desktop looks interesting, it's the first I've heard of it...

Jeezus...if anyone ever said 4.0 was three steps back, I think 4.3 is two dozen giant steps forward...
