    Setting up apache-like server

OK I know that II is still in development but I use it and I don't think there is any difference in this department to HH.
I would like to edit Joomla / e107 type CMS but I need PHP server for that. Irony is I know how to set this up on Windows and I indeed done that, but I have no idea how to do it in Linux, even though that Linux is known as being a good OS for servers. I used XAMPP package that I found on one of local Slovenian sites that provides the whole solution for servers. Meaning you get XAMPP and Joomla together.
So could anyone describe step by step what to do to have "localhost" on Linux.
I'm guessing it might have something to do with srv, but I'm not sure
    Thanks in advance!
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...
