      I'm not sure where to begin ...

      1. Your /etc/fstab file shows no root filesystem. Note that /dev/sda1 is described there as:

      Code:
      # /dev/sda1
UUID=AE583E61583E288B /media/sda1   ntfs  defaults,umask=007,gid=46 0    1
      a NTFS formatted filesystem mounted on the /media/sda1 mount point.

      2. Your /etc/fstab file shows a swap partition at /dev/sda6:

      # /dev/sda6
UUID=b50de480-0075-4a6d-a1b2-6bd05c1af74b none      swap  sw       0    0
      but blkid says there is a swap partition at /dev/sda5, which is shown as a vfat partition in /etc/fstab.

      3. Your /etc/fstab file shows no ext3 formatted partitions, such as one would need to run Kubuntu.

      So that's the short story of "what is wrong" -- the question now is, what would you like to see happen?

        Couple notes:

        You have in the fstab:

        # /dev/sda5
        UUID=8FB4-D162 /media/sda5 vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 1
        and
        # /dev/sda8
        UUID=8FB4-D162 /media/sda8 vfat defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

        If sda5 is your swap, then there should be something like this (from my fstab, sdc3 is swap partition):
        # swap
        # /dev/sdc3
        UUID=7f0f0e96-9c6d-43a4-9b70-13d9e125fb17 none swap sw 0 0
        or same thing without UUID:
        # swap
        # /dev/sdc3
        /dev/sdc3 none swap sw 0 0

          Oops, not only is Rog correct, but I missed this:

UUID=e8c2eecd-e111-4c7f-87cd-79264506dd64 /media/sda7  ext3  defaults    0   2
          PROBABLY that is where you meant to install Kubuntu, or maybe it was installed there, since the /boot/grub/menu.lst file is pointing at hd(0,6) which would be sda7. :P

          If you want to try a little experiment, if you can open the /etc/fstab file for editing by running your Live CD, or otherwise, change that line to read like this:

          UUID=e8c2eecd-e111-4c7f-87cd-79264506dd64 / ext3 defaults 0 1
          Save it and try a boot. You won't get any worse result ....
