Intel 915 gpu not working correctly

I have an acer travelmate 3002 laptop with the intel 915 integrated video card and cannot get it to go to 1280x800 resolution. It seems to be stuck at 1024x768.

Also glxgears is only giving me 800fps.

Any idea how to fix this?

      Use the "intel" driver?

It says its using the 810 driver. Is that the right one?

          Probably.
Try installing the "915resolution" package. Apparently it works for many people.

I agree - you need 915 resolution. It's available from adept. Install, reboot and it should be hey presto!

              NO!

You shold not install 915 resolution. It is small package, that fix you problem, but now it is fixed in last drivers. You ee install xserver-xorg-video-intel

Agreed. The new driver works for me.

Subsequent edit. No it doesn't as it prevents proper shutdown of my Dell 630m with Intel 915 graphics card. Had to keep the power button pressed down and do a hard shutdown. Reinstalling the i810 driver and 915 resolution fixed it.

Whilst on the subject I noted that there are also all sorts of other video drivers installed (eg voodoo, cirrus etc). Is it safe to remove these or is this likely to take out important dependencies?

Should be fine to remove them, as they probably don't depend on anything (at least anything non-driver-related). You might want to preview changes before you apply them, though. Just in case.
